How to Take a Good Photo for Your Event DP (Even With a Phone)

The photo is the most important part of a DP. A clear, well-lit picture makes you look confident and makes your DP stand out in a busy feed. You do not need a professional camera. A modern phone and a few simple habits are enough.

Face the light

Good light does more than any filter. Stand facing a window or stand outside in the shade in the morning or late afternoon, so the light falls softly on your face. Avoid strong sunlight from directly above, which creates harsh shadows under your eyes, and avoid standing with a bright window behind you, which turns you into a dark shape.

Choose a simple background

A plain wall, a green hedge or a neutral corner works well. A busy background pulls attention away from your face. Check behind you for things that look like they are growing out of your head, such as poles, plants or signs.

Use the back camera and hold steady

The back camera on most phones gives a sharper picture than the front camera. Ask a friend to take it if you can. If you take a selfie, hold the phone at eye level or slightly above, and use both hands or a stand to avoid shaking.

Frame for the shape of the DP

Most DP frames are circles or squares, so your face needs to sit in the middle of the picture. Take the photo from the chest up, with your head in the centre and a little space around it. Leave some room above your head and on both sides. This gives you freedom to move and zoom the photo inside the frame without cutting off your forehead or shoulders.

Smile naturally

A relaxed, genuine expression looks best. Take several shots and choose the one where you look most like yourself. Think of something pleasant, or talk to the person taking the photo, instead of holding a stiff pose.

Dress for the event

Wear something that suits the event, such as formal clothes for a conference or bright colours for a celebration. Solid colours usually look better than very small patterns, which can look busy on screen. Make sure your clothes contrast with the background.

Keep editing light

A small adjustment to brightness is fine. Heavy filters, strong smoothing and big colour changes make the photo look fake, and people may not recognise you at the event. If you want to remove a distraction, crop instead of editing it out.

Check the sharpness

Before you use the photo, zoom in on your face. If it is blurry, take it again. Wipe your camera lens with a soft cloth first, because a smudge is the most common reason for soft photos.

Quick checklist

  1. Light falls on your face.
  2. The background is simple.
  3. Your head is in the centre, with space around it.
  4. The picture is sharp.
  5. You look relaxed and happy.

Take your time, take a few pictures and choose your favourite. A great photo takes only a few extra minutes and helps your DP make the right first impression.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a photo from an old event?

A recent photo is best, because people should recognise you when they meet you. Choose a clear picture where your face is easy to see.

Can I use a photo with sunglasses or a hat?

You can, but a photo where your eyes and face are visible usually looks friendlier and is easier to recognise inside a small frame.

Why does my face look cut off in the frame?

The frame crops the picture to its shape. Choose a photo with space around your head, then drag and zoom it inside the frame until your face sits in the middle.
